Stair Lift is a motorized transportation device to facilitate you in lifting chair between stairs and make up and down movement through the stairs easier. A rail is used and a platform like a chair or wheel chair is attached to the rail and movement is done as directed by the user. A US company called Inclinator Company of America introduced the very first specimen of such stair lift in 1930.

Stair lift has two key components, namely the rails and a carriage such as wheel chair or simply a chair. Metallic plates in the form of rails are fixed to the stairs to help in easy movement. These rails are usually made of materials like light weighted aluminum to increase its durability.

The second component is the carriages placed on these rail tracks and operates by various drive management system preferably chain interweaved cables. These carriages come with two handles, a single seat with a foot rest. Some of the staircases where these stairlifts are installed have provision for standing as well. The very popular models of stair lifts are straight rail stair lifts and curved rail stir lifts, goods stair lifts and stair lifts with wheelchair platform, outdoor stair lifts and pre-owned stair lifts.
